Landscaping in Armonk, NY

Armonk's housing stock runs from 1960s and 1970s colonials on two wooded acres, to newer estate homes with circular drives and formal entry courts, to the older houses near the Bedford Road Historic District and Smith's Tavern. What most of them share is depth. The house sits well back from the road, the driveway does real work getting you there, and the front yard is less a lawn than a sequence: woods, then a clearing, then the house. That changes what a plan has to do. Foundation plantings are the last thing we think about on a property like this. The arrival, the grade change at the garage court, how headlights read the driveway edge on a February night, and where the woodland stops being wild all get settled first.

The town is hilly and forested, sitting around 380 feet of elevation, and the soil is glacial till over ledge that surfaces without warning. On plenty of Armonk lots you get eight inches of decent loam and then rock, which decides patio elevations, tree pit locations, and whether an irrigation line goes where it was drawn. Water is the other constant. The Wampus River drains a small, fast watershed above Wampus Pond, and with Byram Lake and the Kensico Reservoir close by, runoff quality is a live subject in North Castle rather than a talking point. Work near a wetland, watercourse, or buffer goes before the town's Conservation Board, and inside a Critical Environmental Area that buffer widens considerably. We plan grading and drainage with that review in view instead of discovering it at permit time.

Conditions shift by neighborhood. Whippoorwill runs to rolling open ground and long sightlines, the kind of property where a hedge line or an allee has room to mean something, and Whippoorwill Hills and Whippoorwill Ridge add gated-community standards on top. Windmill Farm is a different animal, several hundred homes organized around a private lake and clubhouse, with tighter lots, shared views, and canopy shade that makes turf a losing argument in places. Out toward Banksville in the eastern part of town, parcels get larger and the character stays deliberately low-density. A planting palette that works on one of these rarely transfers straight to another, so we price and draw each Armonk property on its own terms rather than from a template.

Deer set the plant list in North Castle before anything else does. Hosta, yew, arborvitae, and tulips are a standing invitation. We lean on natives that hold up: little bluestem and switchgrass for winter structure, Christmas fern and hay-scented fern in the shade under the oaks on the wooded lots off Byram Ridge Road, inkberry and bayberry for evergreen mass, sweetspire and summersweet along the damp edges where the till holds water. Pollinator borders of mountain mint, anise hyssop, and coneflower give you something the deer walk past and the bees do not. When a mature specimen oak or beech starts thinning, our tree and plant health work is usually cheaper, and far better looking, than replacing it.

The outdoor season here has a shape worth planning to. Beds want to be open and mulched before Fol-de-Rol in June, terraces and pool surrounds carry July and August, and everything should look composed the weekend the Armonk Outdoor Art Show fills Community Park. Then the snow arrives, salt starts hitting the driveway edges, and containers and lighting take over through Frosty Day and the parade down Main Street.
