Landscape Design & Build in Fairfield County, CT
Land Art Design has been designing and building landscapes across Fairfield County, CT since 1989. Our design and build service takes a property from the first site walk to the finished project: landscape and hardscape design, patios and walkways, full backyard transformations, and specialty gardens, all handled by one team.
One team from the first sketch to the finished landscape.
Landscape Design & Build
A good landscape has to work as well as it looks. That is the whole premise of design and build: the person who draws the plan is accountable for how it performs once it is in the ground. Our design and build service covers landscape design, hardscape design, backyard design and installation, and specialty gardens, so every square foot of your property has a purpose, whether that is a patio for entertaining, a path that handles foot traffic and runoff, or a planting bed that feeds pollinators.
Every project follows the same process. It starts with a free consultation where we talk through your vision, goals, budget, and timeline. Then we analyze the site itself: sunlight exposure, soil quality, grading, and drainage, because those conditions decide what will actually thrive. From there we develop the concept using 3D modeling and sketches, so you can see the design and react to it before any work begins. Once you approve the plan, our crews build it, managing every phase through final planting.
Hardscape is the structure underneath all of it. Patios, walkways, retaining walls, and steps define the rooms of an outdoor space and have to be built correctly to last through Connecticut winters. We work in natural stone, concrete, and wood, chosen for how they hold up and how they sit against your home's architecture. Just as important is what you do not see: proper grading that moves water away from structures and beds, and retaining walls that hold slopes and create usable terraces. Good drainage planning at the design stage prevents the wet basements and washed-out beds that come from skipping it.
For full backyard projects, we design and build the features that make the space livable: outdoor kitchens, fire pits, seating and dining areas, water features, and landscape lighting that extends the evening. Water-efficient irrigation and lighting are planned into the design rather than bolted on later, and our installation team handles plantings, irrigation, lighting, and grading as part of the same coordinated project.
Specialty gardens are some of our favorite work. Pollinator gardens use native plants with staggered bloom times to support bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds through the season. Zen gardens use rock, gravel, moss, and restrained planting to create a genuinely quiet corner of a property. Kitchen gardens, often in raised beds, put fresh vegetables and herbs a few steps from the back door. Sustainability runs through all of it: native and adapted species, organic practices, and plantings that build biodiversity instead of fighting the site. For Connecticut-specific plant and soil questions, the UConn Home & Garden Education Center is a resource we recommend to any homeowner.
Land Art Design is family-owned and has been building landscapes in this region for more than 35 years, serving all of Fairfield County along with Northern Westchester County, NY and Southern Litchfield County, CT. When the build is done we can keep it looking the way it did on day one through our maintenance programs. Consultations are free and carry no obligation, and we take on projects of any size.

Landscape Design & Build questions, answered
- What is the process for starting a design and build project?
- It starts with a free consultation to discuss your vision, goals, budget, and timeline. We then analyze the site, develop the concept with 3D modeling and sketches, and present the design for your feedback before construction begins.
- Can Land Art handle both small and large projects?
- Yes. We take on everything from small garden makeovers to full-property transformations, with the same design attention at any scale.
- How long does a typical project take?
- It depends on the size and complexity of the design. We lay out a detailed timeline during the consultation phase so you know what to expect before work starts.
- What types of specialty gardens can you create?
- Pollinator gardens, zen gardens, kitchen gardens, and other themed gardens designed around a specific goal, whether that is supporting local ecosystems, creating a quiet retreat, or growing food for your table.
- Why does hardscape matter in a landscape design?
- Patios, walkways, and retaining walls give a landscape its structure. They define outdoor rooms, manage slopes and foot traffic, and, when built with proper grading, protect the plantings and your home from water damage.
- How do you handle drainage and water management?
- Drainage is designed in from the start. We assess your property's topography and water flow during site analysis, then build in solutions like proper grading, efficient irrigation, and drainage systems that protect structures and keep plants healthy.
- Are there environmentally friendly design options?
- Yes, and they are our default. We use native and drought-tolerant plants, permeable paving where it fits, water-efficient irrigation, and organic practices that build biodiversity rather than working against the site.
- Can outdoor lighting be part of the design?
- Yes. We design landscape lighting into the plan itself, from path lighting for safety to accent lighting that highlights plantings and architecture, so the space works after dark as well as during the day.
- Do you maintain the landscape after the project is finished?
- Yes. We offer full maintenance programs, including seasonal cleanups, lawn care, bed maintenance, and plant health services, so the landscape keeps looking the way it did the day we finished it.
